Design a Dream Home or Your Own Restaurant

For this project you may choose one of the following to do: Your Dream Home or Your Own Restaurant
Requirements of the restaurant are located at the bottom of this webpage. Good luck.

Design Your Dream Home

Picture
Part of the "American Dream" is to own your own home. Although this term can be used to describe any house, the design of it can vary. Here's a step-by-step process of how a house is built.

In this project you will design your "Dream Home" which will contain the following:
  • Two or Three Bedrooms
  • Living Room
  • Kitchen
  • Backyard
  • Drive way for the car
  • Bathrooms

Who designs the homes you live in?

Picture
Floors plans are instructions on how to build a structure.
Basically, the word "Home" represents any space where you live in; it can represent a large house, a small apartment, or even a mobile home. The people who design these spaces are called Architects. Their job is to design a place where people can live, work, play, visit, or be entertained. These ideas are later drawn on large sheets with instructions on how the structure (house, building, sports arena, etc) should be built. These instructions are called Floor Plans.

A construction company, along with a person called an Engineer, takes these floors plans and builds the structure according to the measurements. They make sure the building is similar to the Architect's idea while safe to be in.

Design Your Home

There are many programs that allow the average person to design their own home. One such program is a web-based application called Free Home Design. This site allows you to create your dream home, and if you have an account, you can save your designs and create a 3D perspective of it. If you have an email, they will send you a "Virtual Tour" of any of your rooms - for free!

You can even share it online through a social media site. And yes, that means Facebook or Twitter.

Dimensions - Feet and Inches

In architecture, dimensions are measured by Feet and Inches. Architects use single and double quotes to indicate these measurements. For example, if a bedroom measures 10 feet wide by 14 feet - 6 inches long, the architect writes these measurement down like this: 10' x 14'-6"

Choose ONE of the following Floor Plans

If you are struggling to create a custom floor plan, you may download a Pre-Made design from the Internet. Here's how to do it...

The Requirements - Your floor plan needs the following:
  • Two or Three Bedrooms 10' x 14'- One of the bedrooms has its own bathroom. This bedroom is called the Master Bedroom
  • Home Office (Optional) 10' x 14'- One of the Bedrooms can be converted to a Home Office space. Place furniture that will be useful for a person to work in.
  • Living Room  15' x 17'- The entrance to the home is through here; must have windows
  • Kitchen 13' x 15'- Can be attached to the Living Room or separated by a wall. Must install kitchen appliances (stove, refrigerator, counter tops, range). Windows are a must.
  • Backyard - Needs green grass or pavement, some outdoor furniture and it's accessible through the Kitchen or Living Room. You may add a pool if you like.
  • Driveway for the car - Place some type material to indicate it's a driveway to park the car. This is usually asphalt or dirt. (The average car dimensions are 6'-6" x 16') Click here to see the average dimensions of a car - in millimeters
  • Two Bathrooms 7' x 14"- One bathroom must be attached to a bedroom called the Master Bedroom. The other bathroom is open for use by the rest of the home.

Design Your Own Restaurant

Picture
Restaurants can have a home-feel to it.
Let's say your a chef looking to open your own restaurant. How would you design it? What furniture would you use? Where would be the entrance be? How many tables would you have?

Now it's time to make those decisions.

You have been an empty restaurant space with the eating area is 600 sq ft. This means the space where people will eat can be 20' x 30' (20 feet by 30 feet) or 10' x 60' (10 feet by 60 feet). The other spaces can be at the "back" or "side". You will decide what is needed in your restaurant and the furniture will be in it.

However, these are the requirements for all restaurants:
  • At least 3 refrigerators
  • At least 2 stove ranges
  • At least 2 sinks
  • At least 10 eating tables with chairs
  • A fire exit door (by Federal Law)
  • The eating area is 600 square feet (600 sq ft.) 20' x 30' or 10' x 60'
  • At least 1 bathroom
  • A storage room
  • An office room

The Decor

The design depends on what type customers, or clientele, you want coming into your establishment. This is called Decor. For example, a fast-food restaurant interior looks very different from restaurant for business professionals or the wealthy. Neither is better, but both serve a different type of customer.

Not sure what kind of restaurant you want? Look at the following examples of restaurant interior space. Can you guess what type of customers they attract?
